Michael has been working with my son Seb (18), who is aiming to progress at a professional level, and the experience has been extremely positive.
What stands out is how tailored each session is to the individual. Not just technically, but mentally as well. Michael also played an important role in helping Seb prepare for a trial with a professional club, giving him both structure and confidence going into that environment.
Seb has benefitted from Michael’s structured approach. The sessions are built around realistic match scenarios, with a strong attention to detail, particularly around technique, body positioning, and using both feet, which you don’t often get in standard team training.
The written feedback/reports are another standout aspect. They are clear, detailed, and genuinely useful, breaking down strengths, areas for development, and providing a plan going forward. The emphasis on psychological preparation and visualisation has also helped improve Seb’s confidence.
Most importantly, Seb really enjoys the sessions. He comes away motivated, focused, and with a clear sense of what he is working towards.
Michael combines real expertise with a genuine investment in the player, and his coaching has made a meaningful difference to Seb’s development.
What clients say
We engaged with Michael to carry out a report for our son, hoping to gain a detailed understanding of his strengths and weaknesses so we could support his development. Michael observed our son on two separate occasions, as we wanted to see how he performed in different game settings. The way Michael handled the process was first class. He operated discreetly, ensuring our child had no idea he was being watched. We felt this approach gave us the most honest and accurate picture of our son as a player.
The report Michael produced was incredible. The level of detail was outstanding, and the structure made it easy to follow and put into action. It was completely unbiased and honest, and what surprised us most was how clearly our son’s character came through. After only two games, you would think Michael had known him far longer.
The analysis of strengths and weaknesses was clear, constructive, and supported by a four-week development plan that we were able to implement immediately. We especially valued the separate parent and player sections. Our son could read about his strengths and areas for improvement in a way written specifically for him. The “bottle checklist” was a brilliant addition: simple, snappy, and something he now refers to during games, exactly as intended, helping him refocus before, during, and after matches.
Another standout feature was the parents’ checklist for what to say after a game. When emotions run high, it’s the perfect reminder for any parent.
We would absolutely recommend Michael to any parent with a player at any level who wants honest, professional guidance on how to help their child improve. He is a total professional who provides far more than just a report. The work he puts in beforehand to understand the player, the depth and clarity of the report itself, and the ongoing support he offers afterwards are truly outstanding.
My son is a high level U13 goalkeeper. He kept asking me what areas he could improve on to try and get his chance to push into an academy. Being a parent with little knowledge in goalkeeping, I couldn’t answer this. So after finding out about Michael Mulhern Football Consultancy, I got in touch with Michael who found out more about Kai. We all agreed that to get full knowledge of Kai’s possible improvement areas it would be good to get a report on three matches rather than just one.
After doing this and finding out the areas Kai needed to improve on, Michael wrote a full detailed report which also included a player and parent pack. After reading this and spending a classroom session with Michael, my son has massively improved on the areas that needed tweaked.
We still have a way to go to get to academy level but Michael and my son meet up or chat weekly to improve on these areas. This has by far been the best decision in his football journey because we now know exactly what areas we need to work on.
I worked with Michael Mulhern while studying for my UEFA A Licence and also took part in a number of workshops. The support was thoughtful, challenging, and grounded in real coaching practice rather than theory alone.
The mentoring process encouraged reflection, ownership, and a deeper understanding of learning environments in football. That approach had a significant impact on how I developed as a coach and stayed with me as I progressed into professional roles, including coaching at WSL level.
I would strongly recommend this work to coaches and organisations who are serious about developing people, not just programmes.
As a footy mam, who’s knowledge is pretty limited, i enjoyed reading my son’s report. I found it really useful to understand Alby’s strengths and development areas, and how i could support him as he develops further. I particularly found it helpful to give him prompts or reminders on what would help him develop further, as he would usually just ‘roll his eyes’ at me!! I was surprised at how well he listened when his dad read him the report properly. I think this report is a great development tool, and i’ll certainly be going back to Michael to monitor Alby’s progression.
